| | August Speaker |
| who: |
Tony VanHouten of CalTrout |
| what: |
Last year David Finkel gave a wonderful presentation about the CA Golden Trout Project. This
year CalTrout's Tony VanHouten will talk about their ongoing efforts to restore Hat Creek.
Those of you who have fished this blue ribbon stream over the years have probably noticed that
the fishing quality has declined recently. Here's your chance to ask an expert why this is
happening and what groups like CalTrout are trying to do to reverse this trend.

Call for Volunteer Section Editors |
| background: |
You might have noticed that the PFF has one of the nicest and most professional
websites of any NorCal fishing club. This is the result of several generations of web masters
who have worked hard to augmented the content currently the site contains
five years of PFF material and history. I have been web-master now for about one and a half
years without a break. There are many competing interests on my time, including
a full time job, and I need to reduce the enormous amount of effort I spend on the website.
This can mean only one of two alternatives. Either we will need to publish less frequently, say
every two months instead of monthly, or we need a division of labor with reliable assistance
from other members.
|
| what: |
Before asking the Board to reduce the frequency of publication, we will first try dividing the work
into smaller pieces and ask for volunteers to act as section editors. These positions require
absolutely no internet or web skills or experience. Rather, we need creative individuals who
will source, organize, edit, and create interesting articles for our site. Each section editor will
handle a particular section (Fishing Tales, How-To, Fly Tying, Tackle, Short-Report,
and Conservation). All materials can be prepared and delivered as ordinary text editor files (e.g. MS Word)
and standard graphics files (jpeg, gifs, etc). A large part of the job will be finding and working with other
members who have content to add to the site. For instance, the Short-Report editor will be reponsible
for keeping an ear open during meetings or other events, and following up on members' fishing trips.
Once articles are written or edited, the editors will email the final articles to me (in Ms Word format)
so I can convert them into our standard web-friendly format. So absolutely no coding or special
internet skills are needed -- just an interest in working on content and contributing to an excellent
fly fishing resource.
|
| action: |
If you are interested in taking responsibility for one section (Fishing Tales, How-To, Fly Tying, Tackle, Short-Report,
and Conservation), please contact me by the end of August. Again, the positions do not entail any
web or internet coding except, maybe, sending me emails with articles and pictures.

| | Help Assemble the 2005-06 Roster |
| what: |
The membership renewal period has come to an end and we now need to create the new 2005-06 roster.
I will be taking this opportunity to introduce a new web-based membership database system, which
will make the administration of mailing labels and emails much easier and more efficient. Because
the renewal process is entirely paper-based, we need volunteers to type the new
data into the database. Each individual will get 20 or so paper forms to enter.
|
| skills: |
Volunteers will only need typing and web browsing skills. If you can type accurately and have
ever ordered anything from Amazon (or any other web retailer) you have what it takes. All
data entry will take place through a web browser and familiar web forms.
|
| when: |
I hope to have the software application running by mid-August. We hope to completely enter all
the data by the end of August.
