 November Speaker
who: Barry Foster
what: Barry is a Redding expert who has been guiding on the Lower Sacramento River for over ten years. Several PFF members have fished with him and have used some of his novel inventions including "Barry's Communicator" (a novel form of indicator) and "Barry's Beads" for nymphing the Sac during the salmon egg "hatch." Since the salmon are just starting to arrive and because the the lower Sac is open for fishing all year, Barry's talk will keep you fishing past November 15th!
dinner: You can meet Barry at dinner before the meeting. George and Barry will be at Harry's Hoffbrau Haus in Redwood City. Meet at 6:00 PM at the restaurant.
where: Highlands Community Club

 Annual Holiday Dinner
what: It's that merry time of year again and, as always, the PFF will be celebrating another year with our annual holiday dinner at the Highland Club. Socialize with your friends, win prizes, bid on silent and live auction items. And incidentally, you'll be helping boost the club finances while having all that fun. The menu includes prime rib, salad, and baked potato, with cheesecake for dessert. Soft drinks will be provided. BYOB.

As usual, we can use volunteers to help set-up before the dinner, and help clean-up afterwards.
when: Thursday, December 15. Doors open for pre-dinner appetizers at 6:30 PM. Dinner will be served around 8 PM.

Donate Flies (and stuff) to the Winter Raffle
what: One of the highlights of the Annual Holiday Dinner is the silent auction for flies tied and donated by all of the talented tiers who belong to the club. The proceeds from this auction are an important source of funding for club events. Help out by tying one or more boxes of your favorite flies and donating them to the club. It's fun and it is often a real ego booster to see how much others are willing to pay for your flies.
not a tier?: Even if you're not a tier, you can still help the club by donating something nice for the auction. In the past, members have donated new clothing (fly fishing t-shirts), bottles of wine, and even a brand new door mat! We are looking for items that are in excellent condition that are somehow related to fly fishing – like a case of fine wine. ;-)

Fall Fly Swap Theme – Emergers
what: The participants at the last workshop decided that the theme for this year's fall swap will be "Emergers." These are flies that imitate an insect transitioning from a pupa state to a full adult. Examples include LaFontaine's Deep Sparkle Pupa, the Klinkhammer Special, the Z-Wing Caddis, and the famous Serendipity. The most comprehensive book on tying these is " Tying Emergers" by Jim Schollmeyer and Ted Leeson published in 2004. I have been in hatches where an emerger version of an Adams produced fish while a regular or parachute Adams got nothing but sniffs.

Here are the basic swap rules:
  1. Six tiers tie 14 flies of the same pattern.
  2. After all flies are turned-in, each participant will get back 6 pairs of flies, including two of the flies they tied themselves.
  3. The extra 12 flies will be donated to the club for one of the silent auctions at the Holiday Dinner.
  4. Pictures of your masterpieces get posted to our fly tying page.
when: So far we have 2 (of 6) tiers. Please contact me if you want to participate. All flies need to be completed by December 10, 2005, in time for the Holiday Dinner auction on December 15.

 Paper Roster Coming in December
what: The paper roster is being generated from the electronic on-line version and we aim to start distribution at the December Holiday Dinner. Rosters that we do not distribute directly in December will be mailed to members.

 Monthly Fly Tying Classes
what: The beginners and intermediate/advanced fly tying classes started last month with a great turnout. It is not too late to join since the November classes were mainly organizational. They will meet once a month through May, 2006.
teachers: Harold Patterson, 2004 NCCFFF Fly Tier of the Year, will again be teaching the beginners class. The class syllabus is available by clicking on this link (Beginner Syllabus). There will be a $15 materials fee for the class.

Dave Kruss, 2003 NCCFFF Fly Tier of the Year, will teach the intermediate–advanced sessions and like last year, his efforts will be supplemented by a number of guest tiers demonstrating their favorite flies. Dave will spent the next next three sessions on striper and steelhead flies A $15 materials fee will also apply for this class.

Kudos to the New Raffle Chair
welcome: Please join the PFF Board in welcoming our new PFF Raffle Chair, Allen Cary. Allen has served as the club's 2002-03 president and has generously volunteered to take on the work that was previously done by Kelly Bandlow. Kelly, unfortunately, has moved to a better riffle in North Carolina. We look forward to some exciting raffles and, of course, those silent fly auctions twice a year. Please give Allen your thanks for stepping in mid-year.
 Web Roster System Now On-Line
what: If you click over to the roster page, you will see that some changes have occurred. We have moved all the new membership roster data to an entirely new system which is more secure and more useful for both PFF members and volunteers.

You can check and edit your own entry in the system by logging in. If you can browse the web and type, you can edit your own entry. Your log-in name is your your first and last name (as you entered on your membership form) in all lowercase letters, contatenated together. So if your true name is John Trout, then your login name is johntrout. Your initial password is "pff" but the system will require you to change this when you first log in. Please don't use your favorite, secure password because the system is not totally fool-proof. Use a simple password that you can remember easily.
when: You may change any of your membership information whenever you wish. However, on November 26 (Saturday) we will create an exact copy of the database to produce the printed version of the roster. So if you need to update your data, please do so before that date.
help: If you are having difficulty and need assistance with the roster, please contact the webmaster.

 Call for PFF Year-In-Review Pictures
background: We are fast approaching the end of the general trout season and will soon be thinking of holiday cheer. PFF member, Jim Ducey, has volunteered to help produce a short "year in review" multi-media piece for the club, to debut at the Holiday Dinner (December 15).
what: Creating this Oscar nominee (best fly fishing docu-drama) will require help from the PFF membership. Please send me your very best fly fishing photos from 2005 including information about the picture (who, what, when, where). They are particularly useful if they feature club members having fun doing what we do best. We can't guarantee we'll use them all, but more is better. I know you all rushed out and bought that Pentax Optio WP I reviewed, so let's see the pictures you took!
when: It will take some time to put everything together, so the deadline for picture submissions will be November 26 (Thanksgiving Weekend).
