 October Speaker
who: Hogan Brown
what: Hogan began fly fishing from an early age, virtually growing up on the banks of the North Fork and Lower Yuba rivers. He has chased trout and steelhead in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Alberta provinces in Canada. Far from being a trout snob, Hogan has spent considerable time fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass and readily admits to enjoying catching carp and catfish on a fly. Hogan blends many different styles with his own unique approach to create innovative flies for catching bass, steelhead, and trout. Hogan is a contract tier for Idylwilde Fly Co. and has over 15 patterns out through them. Hogan began guiding the North Fork and Lower Yuba Rivers when he graduated from high school and eventually relocated to Chico to attend Chico State. Hogan is a 2005 graduate of Chico State with a degree in Social Science and a minor in Psychology and is now pursuing a Masters in Education. Residing in Chico, Hogan guides the Lower Yuba River, Lower Sacramento River, Trinity River, and Feather River along with various bass water and small streams and rivers outside of Chico for Sac River Outfitters. He is a FFF certified casting instructor and an Idylwilde contract fly tier.

 November Speaker
who: Barry Foster
what: Barry is an expert guide concentrating mainly on the Lower Sacramento River. Several PFF members have fished with him and have used some of his novel inventions including "Barry's Communicator" (an indicator) and "Barry's Beads" for nymphing the Sac.

Call for Volunteer – Raffle Chair
background: Our current excellent Raffle Chair, Kelly Bandlow, is moving away from Trout Heaven (e.g. California) to pursue greener pastures on the East Coast. (Rumor has it that there's a bass pond out there with his name on it.) The October general meeting will be his last raffle with the PFF.
the job: Membership dues and the funds raised by the raffles - both monthly and at the major dinners - are the two largest sources of club income. So not only does the Chair keep things interesting, he or she plays a crucial role in helping the club pay rent, host this website, arrange club speakers, and all the other good fly fishing stuff the club brings to its members.

If you like to play with fly fishing gear, are organized, and like to meet people, volunteer as Raffle Chair! The club needs your help.

Fly Tying Classes To Start on November 3rd
what: The beginners and intermediate/advanced fly tying classes will start with November's workshop, and will meet once a month through May, 2006.
teachers: Harold Patterson, 2004 NCCFFF Fly Tier of the Year, will again be teaching the beginners class. A syllabus will be available shortly. The November session will be mainly organizational. The club has some extra tying equipment, which will distributed at this meeting. Picture yourself on a beautiful river fighting a feisty trout on a fly you tied yourself. It doesn't get much better than that. There will be a $15 materials fee for the class.

Dave Kruss, 2003 NCCFFF Fly Tier of the Year, will teach the intermediate–advanced sessions and like last year, his efforts will be supplemented by a number of guest tiers demonstrating their favorite flies. A $15 materials fee will also apply for this class.

 Fall Fly Swap
what: A fly swap is a way of exchanging flies. We've run several successful swaps over the past year and we ain't stopping. The basic rules are:
  1. Six tiers tie 14 flies of the same pattern.
  2. After all flies are turned-in, each participant will get back 6 pairs of flies, including two of the flies they tied themselves.
  3. The extra 12 flies will be donated to the club for one of the silent auctions at the Holiday Dinner.
  4. Pictures of your masterpieces get posted to our fly tying page.
when: A theme will be chosen during the November 3rd workshop. All flies need to be completed by December 10, 2005, in time for the Holiday Dinner auction.

New Roster System to Start This Month
what: If you click over to the roster page, you will see that some changes have occurred. We have moved all the new membership roster data to an entirely new system which is more secure and more useful for both PFF members and volunteers.

You can check and edit your own entry in the system by logging in. If you can browse the web and type, you can edit your own entry. Your log-in name is your your first and last name (as you entered on your membership form) in all lowercase letters, contatenated together. So if your true name is John Trout, then your login name is johntrout. Your initial password is "pff" but the system will require you to change this when you first log in. Please don't use your favorite, secure password because the system is not totally fool-proof. Use a simple password that you can remember easily.
when: You may change any of your membership information whenever you wish. However, on November 12 (Saturday) we will create an exact copy of the database to produce the printed version of the roster. So if you need to update your data, please do so before that date.
help: If you are having difficulty and need assistance with the roster, please contact the webmaster.

 Call for PFF Year-In-Review Pictures
background: We are fast approaching the end of the general trout season and will soon be thinking of holiday cheer. PFF member, Jim Ducey, has volunteered to help produce a short "year in review" multi-media piece for the club, to debut at the Holiday Dinner (December 15).
what: Creating this Oscar nominee (best fly fishing docu-drama) will require help from the PFF membership. Please send me your very best fly fishing photos from 2005. They are particularly useful if they feature club members having fun doing what we do best. We can't guarantee we'll use them all, but more is better. I know you all rushed out and bought that Pentax Optio WP I reviewed, so let's see the pictures you took!
when: It will take some time to put everything together, so the deadline for picture submissions will be November 26 (Thanksgiving Weekend).

Mystery Equipment Sale at November Workshop
what: Two boxes of fly fishing equipment have been donated to the club and will be sold at the November Workshop. We currently don't know exactly the contents so it will be a bit like a garage sale, or a blue light special, or a flea market. Well, you get the idea.
date: November 3 at the Workshop
Dan Blanton's Striperfest and BBQ 2005
what: In 1997, the saltwater fly fishing community centered around the Dan Blanton web board started this tradition to physically gather all the posters together in one place. It has grown and evolved to the current event which features fishing, fundraising and a grand BBQ in the Delta. The fine folks at the Sugar Barge will be preparing a mouth-watering buffet including St. Louis Style Ribs, Cajon Charbroiled Chicken, Tex Smoked Brisket and all the extras. The funds raised at the event will agin be given to the the Bay/Delta Conservation Committee of the Northern California Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers.
date: Saturday, November 5; starts a 4:00 pm at the Sugar Barge Restuarant on Bethel Island.
cost: $25 per person.

Pictures Of New PFF Officers and Volunteers
what: Since we have a new crew of volunteers (officers, directors, and/or committee chairs), we need to get a picture of you for the website so we can update the website. Rodney will be available to take a nice portrait of you at any club meeting or event -- so dress nicely!

More Free Back Issues of Assorted Fly Fishing Magazines
what: We seem to have tapped into a hidden resource. Another PFF member has generously donated his collection of fly fishing magazines for "recycling" to other members. We will set them out at the next general meeting, first-come first-serve. (Actually, if you have any similar publications you might want to share with other members, feel free to add them to the stack or contact Rodney.)
