John
William Gross July 11, 1944 -- Nov. 28, 2009 Proud native San
Franciscan, passionate outdoorsman, conservationist, and family man who
lived life with an unparalleled zest. He is survived by his wife Elaine
Van Vleck, sister Barbara Bladen Porter, and daughters Georgia Noelle
Gross, Clare Ellen Ota (Alfredo), and Rochelle Frances Petruccelli
(Joseph), grandchildren Daniel Legaspi IV and Isabella Frances
Petruccelli. Preceded in death by parents John Joseph and Frances Ruth,
sister Frances Joan Tracy and first wife Georgianna. He was a well
respected second-generation painting contractor. John meticulously
maintained and vigorously fished the 1939 wooden cabin cruiser,
Jo-Fran. He developed a love of salmon fishing and the sea at an early
age and pursued tarpon, steelhead, and other sportfish with a fly-rod
worldwide as well as hunted deer with his father and friends. A partner
at Sprigsville Ranch, Grizzly Island with beloved friends where he
hunted ducks and fished for stripers. John traveled, read, ate, worked,
lived, and loved to the end. A Past President of Peninsula Fly Fishers,
PDCA, proud member & supporter of GGFA, DU, CWA, IGFA. Subscriber
to SF Opera, Symphony, Ballet and Oregon Shakespeare Festival. John
attended St. Emydius Grammar School, Archbishop Riordan High School and
San Francisco State College. He served from 1964-1970 in the US Navy.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate his life at the Spinnaker
Restaurant, Sausalito, CA at 3:00PM. Sunday, Dec. 6th. Donations can be
