Shawn Reece, from the California Fly Shop will be the Fishmaster for the day. Bring your float tubes, pontoons and other float devises and learn the "how to" for small lake fishing.
The itinerary for the day will be as follows:
7:00-8:00- meet in the parking lot to the right of the guard kiosk, rig rods and get tubes inspected.
8:15- 12:00- fish the front portion of the lake (hopefully seeing fish rising)
12-1:00 break for lunch, further assess fishing conditions
1:00-4:00pm continue fishing, finishing the day near 4pm (gates close at 5pm) be sure to have plenty of time to pack up gear.
Flies to bring: Note; You can drop by the fly shop and have Shawn give you a hand is selection
wooly buggers, spiders/soft hackles, nymphs such as princes, pheasant tails and hare's ear, baitfish imitations. Patterns with orange, chartreuse, purple, red, black, olive or white are effective. Sizes for streamers (6-10) nymphs (10-16). The fish can be caught on a variety of patterns in a given day, they seemingly go through color phases. Orange , gold and olive patterns seem to work consistently. If you tie, be creative with color schemes i.e. Red/white, olive/orange, white/orange , black/ pink etc.
4x-6x tippets and leaders are advised. Intermediate to type 3 sink lines are recommended to bring along. Midges fished with floating lines and indicators can produce as well, but it isn't my go to approach. Flies that work at pyramid also have their place in this lake. Lead is prohibited since it is a drinking supply, so bring tin split shot if you plan to use.
It gets chilly this time of year, bring layers for the day
Hope this will give you a better idea for the approach and the day's events!
See you there,
Shawn Reece
