General Meeting September 19

Speaker: Dave McCants

Topic: Think Differently to be a Successful Fly Fisher

General Meeting: 7:30 pm

Special Fly-tying Session before General Meeting: 5:45 pm

1665 Fernside Street, Redwood City 94061 (please arrive 5:30 pm if you can help set up.)

Pizza and refreshments will be served (if you can, please pitch in and donate $5 to defray the cost of pizza and drinks).  Be sure to come early so you can enjoy some special time with Dave as he is most entertaining and colorful.  Dave will be tying some of his favorite flies at the side table prior to the general meeting starting at 7:30 PM, and will no doubt hand out a few to some lucky members.

Dave is an expert fly tyer and fly fisher, well known and highly regarded throughout the flyfishing community.

Dave has been fishing Putah Creek for 40+ years.  He is a founding member of Putah Creek Trout, an organization that has successfully helped classify Putah Creek as a Wild Trout Stream…a catch & release fishery, with barbless single hooks only allowed on the stream.  Putah Creek was designated as a California Wild Trout Stream in 2014, largely as a result of extensive work done by Putah Creek Trout, in conjunction with California Department of Fish & Game.  Dave has developed and perfected flies and nymph fishing techniques that work successfully on Putah Creek (and other streams), and over the years has introduced countless fly fishers to Putah Creek, showing them where and how fish (and catch very nice wild Putah Creek trout).

A few years ago, Dave and his wife Ann moved to Medford Oregon and he has turned his attention to learning and mastering the Rogue River.  In just a short time, Dave has made quite a name for himself as “that guy from California who catches more fish than locals who have been fishing the Rogue River for many years”.  He already has developed and perfected an extensive repertoire of specialized flies and proven techniques to consistently catch Rogue River steelhead and trout.

Presentation Topic: Think Differently to be a Successful Fly Fisher

Dave will cover “why and how” doing things differently can make a big difference in your flyfishing experience and results.  He will highlight important aspects of how to “read the water” to determine where the fish are and put your fly in the right position to entice fish to strike.  Likewise, fly selection and presentation will be discussed with Dave’s unique point of view and “out of the box” thinking.

The presentation will also cover fly fishing on his two favorite streams…mainly the Rogue River (Dave’s current home waters) and some notes about Putah Creek (Dave has 40+ years of experience here), with Dave passing along his insights of how to approach these two fisheries, along with his ideas on tactics and flies to use to have a successful outing.

Because we are hosting the pre-meeting fly-tying session, there will be no pre-meeting dinner at City Pub.
