April General Meeting: Mark Won -- Fly Fishing the Surf

  • April 16, 2020
  • 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Meeting via Zoom conferencing (login info will be sent via email)

Mark Won is a self-professed "surf fly fishing junkie".  His passion started in the early 1990s with community event center course "Fishing the Surf Zone" with instructor Ken Hanley.  Mark had previously plied the surf zone successfully with conventional gear, and in his early days fly fishing the surf he was like the rest of us -- experiencing frustrating "skunk days", flaying his rod while trying to battle the waves, wind and chaotic water just to get a cast out near feeding fish.

Yet Mark was intrigued by the artfulness of fly fishing in the surf, and after upgrading his gear and landing a few feisty surf perch at the beach, the fire was lit, and his passion grew.  Mark has logged hundreds of days fly fishing the surf from San Francisco south to Monterey building his craft and he's now unquestionably a surf fly fishing expert.  Interestingly he has refined the technique of using two-handed switch rods and Skagit spey heads to fly fish the surf!

In addition to evolving and refining the sport of pursuing finny species on the fly in the Bay Area’s surf, Mark’s angling interests have also taken him to fresh and saltwater destinations around California and elsewhere – including Hawaii, Alaska, Christmas Island, and British Columbia to name a few. When not wielding a two-hander at one of the local beaches, he can be sometimes found fly plying the waters of San Luis Reservoir/Forebay for fall stripers, or swinging flies for bright, chrome kings, silvers or steelhead in Alaska’s rivers.

Mark has been featured or cited in several popular fly fishing publications, including California Fly Fisher, Northwest Fly Fishing and Fly Fishing in Saltwater. He has also assisted the California Fish and Wildlife and University of California-Davis/Bodega Marine Labs with studies on the surfperch population along the North-Central California coast.

For our April meeting: Mark will educate us on how to fly fish our local beaches for striped bass and surf perch, including the best seasons, tide conditions, fly gear, flies and technique.

Mark is an excellent instructor and last year led PFF surf fishouts and "mini fishouts" for our members.  We're planning for more this season!

As always, members are welcome to join some PFF members and the speaker for a pre-meeting dinner and beverage at 5:30 pm at City Pub, 2620 Broadway, Redwood City, CA 94063.
