Topic:  Fly Fishing for American River Shad

Andy will present how to fly fish for American Shad, perhaps the most popular and successful fishery on the Lower American River in Sacramento.  Like striped bass, American Shad are an East Coast import that were first brought to California in 1871 and planted into the Sacramento River.  Their springtime migration with thousands of fish from the salt into Central Valley tailwaters and some coastal rivers to spawn helps jump start many fly fishers' seasons for spring and summer.

A brief bio:

Andy was born in 1960 in Detroit. In his youth he learned to fish with spinning gear for walleye, bass , perch and pike. He moved to California in 1979, two months out of high school. He earned a BA from Yuba College and then moved to Sacramento in 1982 in pursuit of a masters degree which he accomplished in 1985.  He then started at Kiene’s Fly Shop where he has worked for over 25 years.

Andy teaches fly fishing, single hand and Spey, and is a guide and captain, published photographer and writer.  His brilliant photos have been featured on the cover of California Fly Fisher magazine, for which he contributes a column every issue on a featured fly.
