This will be a combination one-day Hex Tour and fishing with Lance Gray, followed by a one-day PFF Fishout the following day.

Hex Tour:

The meeting spot for this trip is Plumas Pines Resort at 1:00 pm. Plumas Pines Resort, 3000 Almanor Drive West, Canyon Dam, CA 95923 Directions: Off Highway 89 take a right on Almanor Drive West. Head East down towards the lake. After the dog leg right in the road – Plumas Pines Resort will be on your right-hand side.

The “Hex Tour” is a simple right to the point tour. The focus is the Hexagenia mayfly and the areas at Lake Almanor where it is found. We drive the west shore of the lake pointing out access areas, fishing tips for each fishing access and the equipment and flies that we use during our guiding operation. The tour is much more about where and when. We cover the entomology of the Hexagenia and why it’s found at Lake Almanor. This hands-on tour gives the fly fisher a firm understanding on the Hex.

The tour includes a lake front tri-tip dinner, rigging and an evening of fishing on the lake. The tour starts at 1:00pm and ends at dark after fishing. Handouts on the tour are provided, including a map of the lake, equipment and rigging setups and a breakdown of the areas where you will find the Hex.

Note: Optional Hex fly pack with flies tied by Lance is available for $45.00 and must be ordered directly from Lance by April 15.

Tour fee is $95 per angler for the tour, minimum of 5 anglers, maximum 8.

Price includes optional transportation, a lake front dinner, beverages, and snacks during the day. Handouts for the tour will include maps, access areas, flies, special setups, equipment recommended and other special features that pertain to the fisheries. A complete list of all equipment needed is listed below.  The Fishmaster will send attendees a release and information form they must sign and return to Lance Gray.

Guests must possess a valid California fishing license and need to bring their own equipment, wading gear and personal watercraft (float tubes or pontoons).  Some equipment rentals are available if needed.

PFF Fishout: Saturday, July 9

The preliminary plan for the PFF fishout (for tour attendees) is as follows:

  • Meet and fish in the morning in our personal watercraft at Butt Valley Reservoir, which is near Lake Almanor and offers excellent fishing on its own.
  • Break early afternoon and relocate to a beach and picnic area at Lake Almanor.  We will have a late-afternoon BBQ lunch/dinner provided by PFF.
  • Use our knowledge gained from Lance's tour to fish the Hex hatch Saturday starting late afternoon or early evening.

NOTES:

  • The final arrangements and details for the Saturday fishout activities will be shared via email prior to the fishout.
  • As an alternative to staying in local lodging, we are investigating camping options at Butt Valley Reservoir.  More information will be posted later.
