Peninsula Fly Fishers

Trinity Fly Only 2010

by Mike McGuire

July 2010

The Trinity Fly-Only Fishout went off as planned, the weekend after 4th of July.. The streamflow situation was close to optimum. The flow had just been dropped to a reasonable level for safe wading, so the fish population was in a relatively naive unfished to condition. In previous years the fishing has been described as "hordes of  teenage punk rocker steelhead wouldn't take no for an answer on getting a lip piercing." This year it wasn't quite that good, but the fish were there and took my old standby soft hackles willingly. On the trip were Mike Pinelli, Allen and Jeanie Cary , George and Maria Convway, Mandy Anderson, Alan Fisher, Donna Horn, Kitty Vroom, and myself. Weather was nice, pretty warm but not unbearable. I think everyone caught fish. Top rod in the group was Allen Cary, who brought some serious artillery tobear in the form of his spey rod. Swinging a spey fly down the riffle below the dam, he hooked up with a rare adult summer steelhead. With a little help from his dog, he landed it.
