Workshop - Gear and Strategies for the Backcountry Angler

About this event

Daniel Bauman, PFF Member and Chief Fishing Officer for Colter Backcountry, will share his knowledge of how to be prepared for a backcountry fishing trip. Whether you like to hike deep in the woods for a few days or just be out on the river all day, this talk is for you!

Backcountry fly fishing is a wonderful way to escape pressured, warm, and crowded rivers, fish for unique native trout species, and enjoy an outdoor adventure that goes beyond the fish you catch. However, fishing trips that incorporate significant amounts of hiking or backpacking come with the challenge of needing fishing gear that can be easily transported, and the ability to be prepared for whatever conditions may face you in a wilderness environment. In this workshop, I will focus on how to plan and enjoy a backcountry trip of any length, including how to find good fishing destinations, what gear you should consider bringing, and useful backpacking and fishing tips for these journeys. I will bring some individual gear items to take a look at and also can describe what fishing setups and flies I use in different conditions. Time permitting, I will talk a bit about some of the more unique backcountry fishing destinations that California and neighboring states have to offer.

Daniel Bauman
Daniel cut his teeth fly fishing the wild trout streams of Missouri in high school and hasn't stopped since. He spent months trying to catch every native trout species of the western Us and documenting it in the Cutthroat Chronicles. He's constantly plotting his next adventure and is thrilled to help Colter design innovative solutions for backcountry angling and put them to the test.
