Peninsula Fly Fishers

August General Meeting with Dave McCants

  • August 18, 2022
  • 7:30 PM
  • Highlands Community Club, 1665 Fernside Street, Redwood City, CA 94061 and Zoom videoconferencing
Topic: Fly Fishing for Steelhead on the Rogue River

Former Bay Area fly fisher Dave McCants now lives in Medford Oregon near the Rogue River, which is his new home water. He will provide information to PFF members on how to be successful fly fishing the renowned Rogue River for steelhead.

Dave will be presenting to PFF via Zoom videoconferencing.  This will be a hybrid meeting with attendees both at the Highlands club and on Zoom.  In-person attendees must be fully vaccinated and boosted and show proof.  Masks are encouraged but not required.  We will record Dave's presentation for member-only playback if you are unable to attend.

Dave is an expert fly tyer and fly fisher, well known and highly regarded throughout the flyfishing community.

Dave fished Putah Creek for 40+ years.  He is a founding member of Putah Creek Trout, an organization that has successfully helped classify Putah Creek as a Wild Trout Stream…a catch & release fishery, with barbless single hooks only allowed on the stream.

Years ago, Dave and his wife Ann moved to Medford Oregon and he has turned his attention to learning and mastering the Rogue River.  In just a short time, Dave has made quite a name for himself as “that guy from California who catches more fish than locals who have been fishing the Rogue River for many years”.  He already has developed and perfected an extensive repertoire of specialized flies and proven techniques to consistently catch Rogue River steelhead and trout.

Dave will cover “why and how” doing things differently can make a big difference in your flyfishing experience and results.  He will highlight important aspects of how to “read the water” to determine where the fish are and put your fly in the right position to entice fish to strike.  Likewise, fly selection and presentation will be discussed with Dave’s unique point of view and “out of the box” thinking.

For those attending the meeting in person, you are welcome to join some club members for dinner and a beverage at 5:30 pm at City Pub, 2620 Broadway, Redwood City, CA 94063.
