"The Ponds" Golden Gate Angling & Casting Club
New Spey Casting Class Starting this Fall! Register Now!
We are preparing to have a new introduction to Spey (aka two-handed) fly casting
class starting November 9th. Spey casting is a great method to swing flies for
steelhead, salmon, shad and even trout.
There are two groups of folks that have expressed
interest in a class; total beginners with no experience and some of you that have started to do Spey and want additional training. No equipment needed as the club has loaner rods for use! See sign-up instructions below.
The practical casting lessons will take place at the Golden Gate casting ponds on
Sundays from noon to 2pm with a start date of November 9th. There will be four
sessions of a couple hours each to teach the basic casts at the ponds.
The first beginning lessons will cover the following skills:
* Understanding difference between Skagit and Scandi lines
* Proper rigging of Skagits and Scandis
* Basic casting stroke which is a two handed roll cast
* The Switch cast
The remaining lessons will cover actual Spey casts (change of direction)
Skill set 2—water loaded casts
* Double Spey cast
* Snap-T cast
The advanced beginner/intermediate class will review the above and then learn the
following casts:
—Splash and Go casts
• Snake Roll
• Single Spey
We will also discuss when and why to use each of the different types of Spey casts, depending on river side, wind conditions and other considerations. If you are interested in taking either of these classes please contact me—Allen
Cary (allencary@icloud.com) by Friday, November 7th.
11/9 Beginner Workshop & Casting
11/16 Beginner/Intermediate Casting
12/7 Beginner/Intermediate Casting
12/14 Beginner/Intermediate Casting
Weather can influence these workshops - if it is beyond a light drizzle we will reschedule.
